Three Boats At Staithes is a rendition of a scene in that small fishing village on the North Yorkshire coast. If you don’t know the place, Staithes is a sheltered harbour, bounded by high cliffs and filled with quaint, old houses in a traditional, architectural style. It’s as picturesque as they come. A narrow river named Staithes Beck runs into the harbour, out of a steep-sided ravine.
Sunlight And Shadow
The three boats were moored side by side on dried mud at one side of Staithes Beck. It was early evening when I was there and the boats were caught in bright sunlight while the river and the steep slope behind were lost in shadow. It’s this effect that I’ve accentuated in the painting.
