This is a Golden Labrador puppy, Ralph, who belongs to my son and daughter-in-law. At the time of writing Ralph is a mere 12 weeks old. My wife and I sometimes “babysit” him. I can tell you, he’s a handful!
How I painted Ralph
I’ve painted the pup the way I often see him – sitting down, looking up at me with big, soulful eyes, hoping I’ll play with him or give him a treat. I was aiming to emphasise his cuteness, so I kept the treatment very simple and omitted the floor. However, you might notice there’s a hint of bluish shadow under Ralph’s nose, just to help “lift” his head.
I mostly kept to three colours: Raw Sienna, Gold Ochre and Blue Black. On a technical note, Winsor & Newton discontinued that last colour long ago from their watercolour range, but I still have 2 or 3 tubes.
I’ve mentioned before that I don’t paint animals much. Ralph is a special case. I feel I got a reasonably good likeness. Now I need to find out what my son and his wife think…
Unframed watercolour painting. Size 8.5 x 11.8 inches / 21.5 x 30 centimetres.
