Late Night Shopping

Late Night Shopping features Princes Street, Edinburgh, around 8.00 pm on a Thursday. It’s the evening when the shops stay open late. From the front windows of stores like Zara, Russell & Bromley and Next, light floods across the pavement, as a family group strides by on foot.

Dominant orange

I’m fascinated by the way shop lights, sharp and bright in the darkness, can transform an ordinary scene with dazzling colour. On this section of Princes Street, the dominant hue was orange. I guess I could probably count on one hand the number of orange paintings I’ve ever done. So it was a pleasure to create this one.

Deliberate contrast

I deliberately set the hurrying family of three against the backdrop of Zara’s window with its three brightly dressed mannequins. I thought it’d make an interesting contrast.
