Originally, the title of this painting was Glassy Cherries, which was my idea of a pun. But it wasn’t much of a pun, because these aren’t glacé cherries, they’re fresh ones. So I changed it to Cherry Glass.
Quite a while back, I came up with the idea of putting cherries inside a glass or jar, on a sheet of black glass, and lighting the set-up from above. I keep coming back to the theme because I enjoy it so much. I love painting the deep red fruit – it takes many layers to get the colour and the glossy look right. The challenge of painting clear glass is also a pleasure. I’ve almost lost track, but “Glassy Cherries” must be the sixth or seventh in my cherry series of still life paintings.
